Art of the Muse is an art project that originated in Costa Mesa’s Location 1980, an art gallery owned and operated by artist Jesse Fortune. Fortune and artist friends recognized that the critical role of the model as muse in the creative process is much less appreciated or even recognized by the general public, so they created a project to focus on the models themselves. The three-year project, headed by Costa Mesa artist, James Trolinger, culminated in the production of a book Art of the Muse, authored by Trolinger, featuring 15 models with paintings by 32 artists who work regularly at Location 1980 and also at Laguna Canyon Studios, which is owned and operated by artist Frederick Hope. The project provided artists an opportunity to do their best work through special Art of the Muse workshops, which included special poses worked out in advance and also a “model’s choice” pose where models performed their own favorite signature poses.
The reception, which is open to the public, will be attended by many of the models and artists who participated in the project. They will be available for book signings, with some providing demonstrations. The best works produced during the project and a limited number of books will be on display for sale. Painting stations will be set up during the reception for demonstrations by models and artists as well as for attendees who wish to try their hand at drawing. All models will be draped or in costume. Bring your own art materials.
Photography will be allowed with a suggested $10 tip to models who are posing for the demonstrations.
